The Battle

Not my most impressive day in the kitchen...

A snapshot of the gory details...Potstickers 1 -- Kate 0

Apparently the direction that stated to use oil AND a nonstick pan
was very important and shouldn't be ignored.

For the record, Allen won the war and the pot is clean again.

Fifty Nifty United States

All together now -
"Fifty Nifty United States from thirteen original colonies,
Shout 'em, scout 'em, Tell all about 'em,
One by one, til we've given a day to every state in the USA
Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut----"

Now that I have that song stuck in your head - on to the point of this blog.

We have a goal of hitting all 50 states together before we are 50.   We've got 23 so far and decided it would be fun to see if we could hit 30 while Allen's still 30.  So, we just got a trip on the books for states 24 thru 29 for this summer, and now I've got to figure out how to find one more state! :)

Interested in our list?  We've added a map on the side to track our progress. ====>

Another Postcard from Shirley will soon be sent from the following states:
New Jersey -- Connecticut -- Rhode Island -- Maine -- New Hampshire -- Vermont

WHT's cake revisited

When I went to the recipe box to share this one with you,
I realized just how perfect this recipe card is.

Take a look --

Why you ask?  Here are the reasons -

1. It's in my Nana's handwriting.
2. It's on a piece of paper from a homemade paper tablet my Dad made.
3. I've never made this before yet you can tell it's been well loved -
see the stains from ingredients on it?
4. My Nana pulled this right out of her recipe box and gave it to me.
5. It has "exact" measurements - like a pinch and the range for the margarine.

See it's perfect!

Ok - so on to the reason you are here - the sweet stuff.

White Crumb Cake
Cake-
2 cups flour
1 1/2 cup sugar
pinch of salt
2 tsp baking powder
1/2 to 3/4 cup margarine (I used butter)
1 egg (beaten)
1 cup milk
1 tsp vanilla

Crumbs -
1 cup sugar
1 cup flour
2-3 tsp crisco (I used butter)

Mix batter and spread in 13x9 pan.
Make crumbs and then cover batter.
Sprinkle top with cinnamon to taste.
Bake at 350 for 30-40 minutes.

WHT's Crumb Cake

Baking is so much more than making something sweet for breakfast.  It's my way of being close to family even when they are states away....  I love you all.
